# Rate limits

> Understand API request throttling and how to handle rate limits.

Peoplewisher applies rate limits to protect API availability and keep integrations reliable.

Rate limits are enforced at the API layer and apply to authenticated API usage.

## Handling a rate limit

If your application is rate limited, the API returns:

```http theme={null}
429 Too Many Requests
```

with a response similar to:

```json theme={null}
{
  "success": false,
  "error": "rate_limited",
  "message": "Too many requests. Please retry later."
}
```

Your integration should:

1. stop sending requests temporarily
2. retry with exponential backoff
3. avoid immediately replaying the entire queue
4. reduce unnecessary polling
